Hi! I’m Hernan!
Before I give you the story of Boldermail, let me provide you with some context! I’ve been a co-owner and developer of The Postman’s Knock since 2013. The Postman’s Knock is a creative website focusing on teaching modern calligraphy through worksheets and video courses. My wife, Lindsey, started the website in 2013, and it has since grown to be the #1 resource online for learning calligraphy. As the blog grew, so did our number of subscribers. To send newsletters to our subscribers, we used initially Feedburner, which was Google-owned and free. Unfortunately, it didn’t provide any customization options, so we had to move on. We then tried Aweber because of its integration with Etsy. As our list kept growing, Mailchimp caught our eye for its sleek interface, and its free tier for up to 2,000 subscribers.
Fast forward a few years to 2018, and we were paying Mailchimp around $450 a month (over $5,000 a year!) to mail our list of 75,000 subscribers 3x per week. I projected our costs would rise to $6,000 by 2019, and $7,500 by 2020. I knew I needed to get things under control. So I did some research (I have worked as a researcher and I have a PhD in Aerospace Engineering) and found out about Amazon Simple Email Services!
Amazon Simple Email Services (Amazon SES) is a service provided by Amazon Web Services (yes, that Amazon!) that sends emails at a whooping rate of $1 per 10,000 emails (that’s $0.0001 per email). For comparison, Mailchimp was charging us $4.25 per 10,000 emails. A $3.25 difference may not sound like much, but it’s over a 300% increase! Once you take into consideration that we were sending about 12 million emails a year, the difference meant thousands in additional costs!
I decided to move us from Mailchimp to Amazon SES ASAP. The problem? Mailchimp had a sleek interface, one that my wife could navigate without too much of a headache. So I embarked myself on a new task: to develop a WordPress plugin that would have a user-friendly interface, and that would be capable of communicating with Amazon SES to send newsletters to our 75,000 subscribers at a rate of $1 per 10,000 emails. After months of hard work, I was able to accomplish this task, and we instantly saved over $4,000 a year! That’s how the Boldermail plugin was born.
We know that other small- to medium-sized businesses might be in the same boat, so we started offering Boldermail as a service. We named it like that because we found a bold way to handle subscribers and email them newsletters. Also, we live in beautiful Boulder, CO! 🙂 So what is Boldermail? It’s a solution that uses WordPress + Amazon Web Services + our own “secret sauce” to bring you an easy, high-quality way to communicate with your subscribers for a low price!
