How It Works
Boldermail uses the Amazon Web Services cloud to deliver email campaigns in a reliable and cost-effective way. Specifically, we use the Amazon Simple Email Services (Amazon SES) to deliver emails at a rate of $0.0001 per email.
We at Boldermail provide you with two things: a WordPress plugin and a server. The server is the middleman between your WordPress installation and Amazon SES. The WordPress plugin communicates with the server and instructs it to deliver emails using Amazon SES.
Why Do You Need a Middleman?
Great question! Other WordPress plugins follow two different paths: they either use your WordPress server (a.k.a. your website’s backend) to deliver the emails, or they interact with Amazon SES directly.
The first option is a bad idea in general, as delivering emails is an arduous task for a CPU, and your website visitors may experience slow loading times or errors when visiting your site. Furthermore, your hosting provider may put a limit on how many emails you can send per day, or the rate at which your emails are sent. This may prevent your newsletter from being delivered correctly, or even at all!
The second option — to interact with Amazon SES directly — is better than the first one, but it still has multiple cons! The plugins that interact with Amazon SES directly do not offer *any* kind of support regarding the setup of an Amazon Web Services account. Unless you are a developer, setting up an Amazon Web Services account, then setting up Amazon SES, can be a dantesque task. Besides the great price, an advantage of using Amazon SES is being able to send emails in batches (for example, sending 50 or 100 emails per second). With other WordPress plugins, you’ll only be able to send one email per second, which means it may take hour before your campaign finishes sending! And even if you could group your emails, using your WordPress server to set up batches of emails, track the opening rate of your emails, or users subscribing or unsubscribing is a resource-intensive task, and again you may end up using more CPU than you want, which will cause errors on the frontend of your site.
How are We Different?
First, our plugin communicates with your Boldermail server, not with Amazon SES. Our plugin sends your newsletter information to your server on Boldermail, and our server gathers your subscriber information, organizes a queue, and orders Amazon SES to send emails in batches. Your server at Boldermail tracks opens, clicks, subscribes and unsubscribes, and then our plugin updates your WordPress database with this information in an efficient manner. Basically, our plugin provides a user-friendly interface, and then our server does all the heavy-lifting — not your website! This ensures that your newsletter is sent correctly, reliably, and at a lower cost than the competition.
How Much Does Boldermail Cost?
First of all, our WordPress plugin is free, and will always be free. As we add features to it (better reporting, autoresponders, etc.), we make the pledge to always keep it free! What you pay for is your Boldermail server — to connect your WordPress installation to Amazon SES via our plugin, and $0.0001 per email you send. Right now, we only have the single Boldermail server plan ($20/month), which es excellent for handling lists of up to 100,000 subscribers. At the moment, we do not offer a free plan, although we may considering implementing one in the future. If your number of subscribers is on the low end (500-1000), you may be better fitted to use another platform such as MailChimp for now, and then migrate it to Boldermail in the future.
